Patricia's Story – Volunteering as part of family life

Patricia, a 53 year-old lawyer from Victoria, BC was looking for an inter-generational volunteer experience for herself, her husband Malcolm and their 14 year-old son, Liam.  “We are raising our son to believe that he has a responsibility to use his many talents and advantages to make a difference for others,” Patricia says.

The family spent a year in Africa working as volunteers in Tanzania.  As part of that experience, they distributed hampers of sports equipment and medical supplies donated by their Victoria community.

When they returned to Canada, the family kept that volunteer spirit going as part of their daily lives. Patricia serves as a director and treasurer of the Sierra Club BC, is a mentor for the University of Victoria Common Energy program, and is on the Care for Creation Committee at her church. Malcolm also helps at their church and for the Sierra Club. As Patricia explains, “This gives us lots to talk about and a common passion.”
