Kim's Story – Volunteering during the work day works
When Kim, 50, joined Investors Group in Ottawa as a financial consultant, she found a company where the culture of giving back to the community is strong. She was already volunteering for Meals on Wheels, where she delivers meals to seniors, people who are disabled or those who may not be able to cook for themselves. The company encouraged her to incorporate that service into her workday. Kim now volunteers over her lunch hour, one day a week, once every two weeks.
“It’s not just part of our corporate culture, its part of our training, right from the beginning,” says Kim. “The company is proud to be a company of people who care about their community. All of us, right from Day One, are encouraged to give back.”

Volunteers Say...
"Being a volunteer is something I recommend.... It is one of the most meaningful activities for anyone of any age. People who give the gift of time always feel good for doing so. It has a positive impact on their well-being, self-esteem and mental health."
Dr. Michael Gordon, Baycrest Centre, Toronto
Did You Know?
Volunteering is a way to bolster community ties. It offers individual rewards, too. According to the Canadian Community Health Survey, "Close to two-thirds of those who felt a very strong or somewhat strong sense of community belonging reported excellent or very good general health."
Statistics Canada, Health Reports, June 2008
